Newton Hill Croft is a quiet and welcoming new woodland not far from the bustling town of Wick. It's a safe outdoor place to burn off energy whatever your age – try fishing for wee beasties in the dipping pond, jogging along to birdsong, or just enjoying the panoramic views across Caithness.

A gentle wander around an area of newly-planted mixed woodland with extensive views across the rolling Caithness farmland.

Firm gravel path throughout, with loose surface stones. Largely flat with some gentle slopes. Some areas may be wet after rain. Three wide gates.

This pleasant trail loops around the whole forest and is a wonderful introduction to the broad range of trees in Newton Hill Croft. We've planted oak, ash, hazel, hawthorn and Scots pine here, all native species which will do well in the Caithness climate. A short detour from the trail takes you to a dipping platform and the mysterious goings-on of ponds.

Getting here

From the centre of Wick take the A882 towards Thurso, then turn left into Newton Road (one way only). Follow this minor road for about 1 ½ miles (2.4 km), turning right alongside mature conifers to stay on the road. At the next junction turn left towards Tannach and you'll see Newton Hill Croft car park on your right. The car park is at grid reference ND 341 496.

KW1 5SA is the nearest postcode, about ½ mile (800 metres) from the car park, on Newton Road.
