A winding trail will lead you up through the woods to the ruins of Arichonan, where you can imagine the life of the tenants who had to leave the village in 1848. There are fine views towards Caol Scotnish and beyond into Loch Sween from this poignant spot.

A lovely walk through the larch trees to the haunting ruins of a clearance village abandoned in the mid-19th century. Good views down Caol Scotnish.
Uneven grassy path, with narrow and muddy sections. One long fairly steep slope. Includes a road crossing and some exposed tree roots.

Arichonan, the largest and most important of a group of five townships in this area, was cleared of its tenants by the landlord in 1848. Many of the buildings are still in remarkable condition and you can begin to imagine life here in the past as you wander amongst them. Find out more about Arichonan’s history on our forest heritage pages.
