Oban forestry expansion is good news for local community
Forestry and Land Scotland’s (FLS) recent purchase of Ariogan Farm, just south of Oban, is set to see an expansion of woodland creation and forest activity yet with less disruption to local communities, residents and businesses.
Sitting between FLS’ Cologin Forest (near Lerags) and the main A816 road, the purchase will allow the local team to further develop sustainable management of the existing woodland.
And by being able to take direct access to the site from the main road there will be much less forestry traffic on the fragile road network.
Andy Hunt, FLS's West Region Manager, said;
“This is great news for us and great news for the local communities as we work together to take our land management plans forward..
“As well as resolving some traffic issues, the fact that we will be expanding our woodland cover and forest activity in to this new area may well create opportunities for local community groups, local businesses and contractors to work with us as we develop and take forward plans.
“However, we’ll first take our time to properly assess the site and its potential and draw up a plan for the site.
“There’s a lot to consider because modern day forest and land management values means juggling environmental, social and economic options to get the mix right and ensure we get the best possible use out of the land.
“The development of plans will of course invite all interested stakeholders, neighbours and community groups to feed in thoughts and views to help develop proposals.”
The 179ha Farm is predominantly open hill, with a small area of crofting land and small areas of existing woodland.
