Apprenticeships

Please note: We currently do not plan to undertake a large scale apprenticeship programme in 2025. We are concentrating on securing internal opportunities for our recent apprentices. Please keep an eye on our recruitment pages for any updates and feel free to set up a job alert.

We offer a variety of apprenticeships from trees and timber - to engineering and procurement. These roles are a great way to enter the working world.

What is an apprenticeship?

We offer several types of apprenticeship, but they follow similar paths. An apprenticeship allows you to earn while you learn. This means you get the advantage of studying part-time at college or university whilst working in the field. You’ll also get help from experienced employees in the same role.

Watch the video below to hear from three of our trees and timber apprentices. Amelia, Robbie and Aidan have all gained permanent roles with us.

Which roles can you apprentice in?

Our apprenticeships are found across several departments, including:

  • Trees and timber - this is the beginning of many forester roles. You'll learn from a variety of specialists to give you a solid grounding in modern forestry. It includes work from several roles like craftsperson, planning forester, and harvesting foresters.
  • Procurement - as a Scottish Government agency, procurement is a vital department. During the apprenticeship, you’ll learn about the whole procurement process. You also learn about the ins and outs of contract negotiation and impartiality.
  • Mechanical engineering - with over 300 forests across Scotland, and around 1,000 employees, we operate a lot of vehicles. Our network of workshops look after a variety of vehicles including cars and harvesting machines. The mechanical engineering apprenticeship gives you a wealth of experience across different vehicles.
  • Civil engineering - we manage around 9% of the land in Scotland, including one of the biggest road networks in the country. The civil engineering apprenticeship is a graduate position and puts you in a team responsible for a variety of projects. These include building new roads and paths through forests. You’ll also be designing and looking after our infrastructure.
  • Unique positions - beyond our core apprenticeships, we sometimes have specialist opportunities. In the past these included areas like data science.

When do we recruit for these positions?

Apprenticeships often begin at the start of school or university terms (like September or January). We usually recruit for these a few months in advance. Please note: We currently do not plan to undertake a large scale apprenticeship programme in 2025.
